Preserved Bonsai Trees

Preserved Bonsai Trees

It was about five years ago when I first heard the term preserved bonsai tree. A friend of mine, Todd, introduced me to this new, and at the time I thought, revolutionary art of creating a very life-like living tree in a pot (bonsai tree). While I still don’t fully understand the whole process of creating a preserved bonsai tree, I can tell you that the outcome is nothing short of extraordinary. I have seen non-preserved bonsai trees, weighing 500 pounds or more, once you include the pot and the soil, that didn’t look as beautiful as some of the art that Todd does in his studio.

What he does is study trees in nature, just like the masters of the traditional bonsai. Then he picks out what he feels are the most outstanding characteristics of the tree, does composite sketches and breaks down all the elements of the tree. He will look at the top of the tree for the shape of the canopy, and then figure out how to recreate it the way he wants it to look. Then he will look at the trunk of the tree to figure out if it is at an angle or straight or if he wants it to curve or not. Then he will decide on where the branches go, to get a great foundation for his trees.

After the foundation is set, the leaves are put into place and after some time he has created the tree, just like he wanted it to look. Now the thing that I like best about Todd’s art is that he also does traditional bonsai trees so the process that he uses to make preserved bonsai trees is the same process that he goes though to make his regular bonsai as well.
